WILLES ROAD AND WELSH'S MEADOW

When Welsh's Meadow and the other flood plain areas are not enough to stop the river bursting its banks, Willes Road alongside the meadow is one of the first roads and bridges to become impassable. Fortunately this happens very infrequently. The last time was in 1998, when the river flowed through the town centre streets for most of one day, causing huge damage to homes and loss of possessions. The previous major flood had been over 60 years earlier.
